For Landlords

RateMyCrib is a platform for honest student reviews of off-campus housing at UIUC. We understand that landlords may have questions or concerns about how the platform works and how reviews affect your business. This page explains our approach.

Good landlords benefit from RateMyCrib. If you provide quality housing, responsive maintenance, and fair lease terms, your reviews will reflect that and students will choose you over the competition.

Our Standards

All reviews on RateMyCrib must reflect genuine tenant experiences. We do not allow fabricated reviews, spam, defamation, or threats. Our Terms of Service require that every review be truthful and based on a real rental experience. Reviews that violate these standards can be reported and will be investigated.

Disputing a Review

If you believe a review contains factually inaccurate statements that are defamatory, you may submit a detailed dispute to ratemycrib@proton.me. Please include the specific review, the statements you believe are inaccurate, and any supporting evidence.

We take disputes seriously and will review them on a case-by-case basis. However, we are not obligated to remove reviews that reflect genuine opinions and experiences, even if you disagree with the assessment. Opinions such as "maintenance was slow" or "the building is old" are protected speech.

We do not accept payment to remove, edit, or suppress negative reviews. We do not offer paid "premium" listings that boost landlord visibility. All landlords are treated equally on the platform.

What You Can Do

The best way to improve your rating on RateMyCrib is to improve your service. Respond to maintenance requests promptly. Communicate clearly with tenants. Return security deposits fairly and on time. Students notice and they write about it.

You can also encourage your satisfied tenants to leave reviews. More reviews give a more accurate picture of your business. We welcome a high volume of reviews from all landlords.

Legal Framework

RateMyCrib is a platform for user-generated content protected under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. We do not author, endorse, or verify user reviews. Reviews represent the opinions of individual users. For full details, see our Terms of Service.
