When you submit a review, we collect: the content of your review, your star ratings, tags you select, the landlord and property you're reviewing, and optionally your .edu email address if you choose to verify your student status.
We also automatically collect basic usage data through our hosting provider, which may include your IP address, browser type, and pages visited. We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.
We use the information we collect to: display reviews on the platform for other students to read, verify student status when a .edu email is provided, improve the Service and user experience, and enforce our Terms of Service (e.g., removing fraudulent reviews).
If you provide a .edu email address for verification, it is used solely to confirm your student status and display a "Verified" badge on your review. Your email address is never displayed publicly, sold to third parties, or used for marketing purposes.
Review data is stored securely using Supabase, a cloud database provider, with servers located in the United States. We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data.
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share anonymized, aggregated data (e.g., "average rent in Campustown") for research or reporting purposes. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of RateMyCrib and its users.
You may request deletion of a review you submitted by emailing ratemycrib@proton.me with details identifying your review. Since reviews are anonymous, you may need to provide information that confirms you are the original author.
We use browser localStorage to remember your "helpful" votes so you don't accidentally vote twice. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party analytics that track you across websites.
If you are a California resident, you have the right under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to request disclosure of what personal information we collect, request deletion of your personal information, and opt out of the sale of your personal information. We do not sell personal information.
If you are an Illinois resident, we do not collect biometric information. We comply with all applicable provisions of the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act.
To exercise any state privacy rights, email ratemycrib@proton.me with your request. We will respond within 45 days.
We retain review data for as long as the Service is operational. If you request deletion of your review, we will remove it within 30 days of verifying your identity as the original author. Anonymized, aggregated data may be retained indefinitely.
The Service is intended for college students (ages 18+). We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe we have collected information from a minor, contact us immediately and we will delete the information.
The Service is operated in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the US, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
